Ontario Moose Goofy Stuff / Back Home
Thanks to Phyllis for sending this one! By now, we're building a small collection of Moose photos. We don't have moose (mooses? meece?) stateside, and let's be glad. Their eyes don't reflect headlights like most critters, and if you hit one of these beasts with your car, you lose. Let's thank Canada for at least one thing - having all the mooses(?). Keep 'em there, thanks.
I did some work in Canada over a period of time, and moose hunting there was a big deal. There was a lottery you had to win to get a moose hunting license. The hunting season was a short time window. If you won a license, you got to go moose hunting. By all accounts, it is great fun. You hang out with your buddies way out in the woods freezing to death, listening more than anything. If you hear trees falling down, there's probably a moose coming.
Great fun until you actually shoot one. Then there's 2,000 pounds of animal on the ground that you, by law, have to get out of there. A mile from a dirt road. A chainsaw is in order to section it up. Great fun until you actually score a kill. My buddy up there enjoyed it for a few years, finally shot one, and swore he'd never do it again. He said if you shot the moose and it fell into the bed of your truck, it's still too much work. Not worth it.
Anyhow, what a majestic animal in the wild. These pics from Phyllis attest to that...
By the length of his beard and the gray legs, I figure he must be over 10 years old. He looks to be well over 8 feet at the top of the shoulder hump and with his head up the height to the top of his antler must be about 12 feet .This guy is king of the forest, no bear or pack of wolves would dare come after him when he has this rack. Considering that a dirt road can fit 1-1/2 cars across ... this fellow is ONE BIG BOY!
THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN IN ELLIOT LAKE, ONTARIO, CANADA
Yes it is a regular size dirt road.
