The fiddle lick you heard when you hit this page came from the weapon shown below- a modern remake of the old National Steel Tricone.  The Tricone was originally manufactured in the 1920's by the Dopyera brothers, later to form the Dobro company.  The original intent of the resonator cone design was to get more volume out of a guitar before the age of electric amplifiers.  Seems the juke joints where the blues dudes played got kinda noisy, and the sound of a standard acoustic guitar got completely drowned out by all the ruckus.
